As students and instructors become more and more familiar with Google Apps, such as Google Docs and Google Drive, I’d like to highlight a lesser known, but equally as useful tool, Google Hangouts. Google Hangouts is a free virtual meeting tool available to all LCC students and instructors.
Google Hangouts allows users to connect with others via video, voice or text. Chat one-on-one or invite the entire class or team (up to 25 participants) to join the same Hangout from their desktop, laptop, tablet or phone. Features include screen sharing, chatting, screen capture, and effects.
Access Google Hangouts by logging into your LCC Gmail account. Then select the Google Apps icon, followed by Hangouts. If you do not see Hangouts listed on the menu, select More to search through additional menu options.

Can external participants join a Hangout?
Yes. External participants can join a Hangout even if they don’t have a Google Apps account. To ensure privacy, you also have the option to restrict access to Hangouts by default.
Is the content of a Hangout secure?
Yes. All video and audio streams in Hangouts are encrypted. Users can join securely even if they’re offsite.
What’s the participant limit for a Hangout?
Hangouts are limited to 25 participants, with no time limit.
Hangouts provide a convenient way to hold virtual office hours, live lectures, or for student to discuss group projects and course assignments. To initiate a Google Hangout, you must have a LCC Gmail account. If you do not have an LCC Gmail account, submit a request to the LCC Help Desk at (517) 483‑5221 or email@example.com. Please note that students automatically have a Google account created upon enrollment. For streamlined access to the Google Apps, students and instructors can integrate their LCC Gmail account with their D2L account.
