Using Video in D2L Discussions

Videos posted in Discussions should directly relate to that discussion topic. Videos could provide discussion prompts, suggestions or examples specific to the topic, as well as assignment instructions, etc.

Why post videos in Discussions?

  • Develop deeper learning of the subject
  • Strengthen student understanding of video content
  • Reach students with a variety of learning styles, especially audio/​visual learners
  • Grab students attention and spark curiosity
  • Allows students to review content multiple times, whenever & wherever, at their individual pace
  • Increase instructor presence
  • Increase student collaboration
  • Increase student/​student and instructor/​student communication


Types of Videos to post in Discussions: 

  • Icebreakers
  • Instructor introduction video (which allows students to respond with their own intro video)
  • Introduction to a discussion topic
  • Provide a common experience for students to discuss
  • Launching point for individual or group discussion
  • Simulations /​ demonstrations/​ real life examples or case studies
  • Virtual field trips (outdoors to the local park, inside the human body, or off to Jupiter)
  • Take students around the globe, to meet new people and hear their ideas
  • Show experiments that can’t be done in class
  • Bring great literature, plays, music, or important scenes from history into the class
